Well I beat Megaman X today in under an hour for the first time ever (57:59). I've been low key practicing the speedrun off and on for a couple years. My goal time is in the low 40s. World record for this category is about 35 minutes. I had a great back half of the run, consistent hadoukens on the final boss rush, and even got the Armardillo skip glitch for the first time. Really needed this massive win today and I'm so glad it happened. Today was the 14th anniversary of my brother's death. It hasn't really gotten any easier but I'm trying to stay positive and do things to celebrate his memory. He and I shared our love for Megaman games, and for a while we were trying to collect all of them from the NES series. Not particularly easy to do as kids in the 90s, scoping out the used games at Budget video rental on a regular basis. He was eight years older than me so most of our time gaming together meant I was watching him in awe. I tried to beat Megaman X over the years, including into my early twenties (almost beat it at Chelton once..) but didn't get the win until February 3rd, 2019. It took me over five hours. I know Web would be proud of me. I also know he would be telling me all the things I'm doing wrong, and he'd be pushing me to get faster. There's so much symbolic energy in beating this game for me. Defeating demons. Keeping Web's memory alive. I got the sub 1 hour and shouted in celebration and cried. Here's to many more years of shaving time off my personal best every winter... sub 50 minutes.. sub 40.. world record? No definitely not, but maybe top 100 if I'm lucky. Rest in Peace, Webster. I miss you every day. [February 3rd, 2021]
